A Q&A with Lisa Bankston, LPN of the Riverside Convalescent Center – West Point

Lisa Bankston, LPN of the Riverside Convalescent Center – West Point

We sat down with many of the Riverside nurses who serve the Middle Peninsula community to learn what drives them to help bring health and wellness to our patients and residents. Here’s what Lisa Bankston, LPN of the Riverside Convalescent Center – West Point had to say.

What do you find most rewarding in the practice of nursing?

Making a difference in the day of a life. It doesn’t have to be big, doesn’t have to be small. Just has to be a difference. For me, sometimes is can be remembering something specific about what a resident likes or what they enjoy. That helps you form a connection with them. For example, I have a patient on hospice. He loves the Richmond Times-Dispatch. We don’t get it. So the other day brought him the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

What do you find most challenging/difficult in the practice of nursing?

Time management. I find that I spend more and more time on the computer charting about the time I spend with the patient.

Can you describe what it means to be a Riverside nurse in your own words?

‘To care for others as we would care for those we love.’ The minute I saw that Riverside mission statement was the minute I knew I needed to be here. It’s is my mission life statement. It is like we were soul mates – me and Riverside.

Why do you think nursing is still viewed as the most trusted profession?

Because of what we have to deal with on a personal level with a patient. It’s very intimate. It can be often times embarrassing for the patient. Uncomfortable for the patient. You have to trust somebody with all of your insecurities, crises and hopes.

Plus, in lifelong health, nurses are seen every day.

How do you balance the art and science of nursing and focus on caring instead of curing?

Think about hospice. Our goal is not to cure, it’s to care. There can be a lot of cure in the care. It may not be cure as you see it that you are healed. But there is a lot of cure in that emotionally.
